The southern United States is not yet clear of heavy rainfall and flooding following a wet Memorial Day weekend. On Tuesday, around 15 million people from Louisiana to Georgia are under flood alerts as more severe weather is expected. Areas could see up to 2 inches of rain with thunderstorms predicted as well.
Photos from the weekend show a flooded driveway in Poplarville, Mississippi, and vehicles stuck in water in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Severe weather is forecast from the Carolinas to western Texas. This includes the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes, particularly in southwestern Texas around Midland and Fort Stockton.
New Orleans is on flood watch until 7 p.m. local time, with showers likely persisting into the evening. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches. On Memorial Day, stationary thunderstorms impacted the Dallas-Fort Worth region severely.
Similarly, Atlanta remains under a flood watch until 11 p.m. local time. Rain is expected to range from 0.75 inches to 1.25 inches, with certain areas possibly receiving up to 2 inches. Both New Orleans and Atlanta could experience rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. This means even places not currently under a flood watch might still encounter flash flooding.
The region should prepare for more potential precipitation throughout the week, though final rainfall amounts are not yet determined.
