Switzerland Advances to World Cup Quarterfinals with Shootout Victory

Switzerland secured a place in the World Cup quarterfinals after a dramatic 4-3 shootout win over Colombia, following a scoreless draw on Tuesday. Ruben Vargas successfully converted his penalty, ensuring Switzerland’s progression.

Switzerland will face defending champions Argentina on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Argentina emerged victorious against Egypt earlier in the day, with a 3-2 win.

This is the first time Switzerland has reached the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting the event in 1954. The Swiss team played without key young midfielder Johan Manzambi, who suffered an injury during training on Monday.

Despite leaving training early, Vargas, who already scored two goals in the tournament, made himself available off the bench. He entered the match during stoppage time, contributing to Switzerland’s success in penalties.

Colombia’s defender Davinson Sanchez missed a penalty, hitting the crossbar. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also made a crucial save against Cucho Hernandez’s attempt.

With FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance, BC Place was filled with Colombian supporters wearing yellow.

Colombia, absent in the 2022 World Cup, previously reached the quarterfinal stage in 2014 but were defeated by host Brazil. The Swiss team has consistently reached the round of 16 in the past three World Cups, but faced challenges advancing due to the tournament’s smaller field of 32 teams.

The match featured contrasting styles, with Switzerland’s organized play facing Colombia’s attacking approach. Switzerland maintained slight possession advantage.

Johann Manzambi, notable for his three goals in the tournament and a standout figure, was absent, alongside Luca Jaquez and midfielder Michel Aebischer.

Colombia’s Gustavo Puerta created an early opportunity with a long-distance shot in the 21st minute, but Kobel pushed it away.

Fabian Reider, aiming from a distance, provided Switzerland a key chance in the 30th minute, challenged by Colombia’s goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. Vargas denied another Swiss attempt shortly afterward.

Reider attempted a free kick in the 52nd minute, skillfully curling the ball around the wall, but hit the side netting.

During extra time, Colombia pressured Kobel with Jhon Lucumi’s header striking the crossbar.

The two teams also faced off in the 1994 World Cup group stage in the United States, where Colombia emerged 2-0 victors.
