Trump Nominates Todd Blanche for Attorney General

3 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Todd Blanche as attorney general. Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s personal lawyer, has been acting attorney general since the dismissal of Pam Bondi in April.

During a White House dinner, Trump stated his plans to formally nominate Blanche at an event in the Rose Garden. Blanche has been significantly involved in advancing Trump’s agenda during his acting role. He positioned himself as a contender for the post, especially after launching investigations into critics of Trump and proposing a controversial fund for alleged political persecution victims.

The proposed $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” intended to compensate Trump allies has caused bipartisan concern. This led to its withdrawal as criticism mounted from both Democrats and Senate Republicans. The latter group is key for Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general.

Blanche replaced Bondi, who was removed following her failure to prosecute Trump’s political adversaries. Despite claiming no pressure from Trump, Blanche’s actions have often aligned with the president’s interests, sparking accusations of continuing to act as Trump’s personal lawyer.

Under Blanche’s leadership, the Justice Department has pursued actions against long-time Trump opponents. He has insisted on correcting past abuses by the Biden administration rather than political motives. Notably, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted over an alleged threat involving a social media post with seashells on a beach. Comey described his case as politically motivated.

Additionally, Blanche appointed Joseph diGenova to oversee a probe in Florida regarding potential conspiracies against Trump by former law enforcement and intelligence officials.

Blanche’s attempts to implement the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” drew criticism from both parties. Concerns arose that it might benefit participants from the January 6 Capitol riot, yet Blanche declined to exclude them publicly. Facing backlash, Blanche informed lawmakers that the Justice Department would not pursue the fund, affecting legislation to support Trump’s immigration policies.

Blanche previously gained notoriety as a New York federal prosecutor and as a key figure in Trump’s defense during the hush money trial. He claims his direct experience highlighted what he sees as the biased actions against Trump’s administration.
