President Donald Trump announced plans for a $100 million investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing in Kentucky at a rally on Saturday. He suggested this funding hinges on Republicans winning the upcoming midterm elections. Speaking in Highland Heights, Trump emphasized the role of this investment in revitalizing a drug manufacturing facility in Winchester, Kentucky.
During his address at Northern Kentucky University, Trump tied the promised investment to Republican success in the elections. He noted the lack of details on how the investment would be structured and the current status of the Winchester facility. Newsweek has contacted Antheia, the involved company, for further information.
Trump’s speech highlighted manufacturing and economic development as key themes. He envisioned significant economic gains as new manufacturing sites start operations within a year, forecasting unprecedented economic numbers.
Antheia’s Role
Antheia, based in California, manufactures pharmaceutical ingredients crucial for essential medicines. The company focuses on biosynthesis technology as an alternative to agriculture-dependent supply chains. Antheia’s primary product, thebaine, is used in medications for severe pain and addiction treatment, with commercial delivery set for 2024. The company is also working on producing other ingredients like oripavine and scopolamine.
This announcement aligns with a federal initiative to boost domestic production of critical pharmaceutical components. Previously, Antheia received a $9 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for thebaine production. They also obtained a project agreement worth up to $12 million through a Defense Production Act program.
The anticipated $100 million investment is substantially larger than those prior federal commitments. However, details of the Winchester project and specific manufacturing plans remain undisclosed.
Trump’s Comments on Iran and Protesters
During the Kentucky rally, Trump also addressed the conflict with Iran, stating it would end swiftly. He described U.S. actions against Iran as an ‘excursion,’ claiming decisive victories.
The event was briefly interrupted by a protester, whom Trump suggested might be a paid demonstrator. Trump pondered whether charges should be pressed against the individual before deciding to have him released.
Another brief disruption occurred, with Trump asking if an attendee was a ‘friend or foe,’ emphasizing the potential risks of opposition at the rally.
Competitive Political Races in Kentucky
Trump’s visit coincides with Kentucky voters preparing to elect a successor to outgoing Republican Senator Mitch McConnell. The Senate race features Republican Andy Barr against Democrat Charles Booker. Limited public polling shows Barr leading Booker, with a margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
A tight race also exists in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, where Republican Ralph Alvarado competes against Democrat Zach Dembo. Recent polling shows Dembo ahead, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
The rally was held in the 4th Congressional District, where Republican Ed Gallrein faces Democrat Melissa Strange. There is no recent polling available for this contest.
