The U.S. men’s national soccer team began their World Cup journey with a decisive victory against Paraguay, winning 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The team dominated from the start.

The U.S. secured their first goal in the 7th minute, credited as an own goal when the ball deflected off Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla. Folarin Balogun, the U.S. star striker, scored the second goal in the 31st minute by maneuvering the ball past Paraguay’s goalkeeper, Orlando Gill. Near the end of the first half, Balogun struck again, sending a powerful shot into the top left corner.

Paraguay attempted a comeback with a goal by Mauricio in the 73rd minute. However, in second-half stoppage time, Gio Reyna cemented the scoreline for the U.S. with a remarkable goal.

This victory earns the U.S. three points, placing them at the top of Group D, which also includes Australia and Turkey. The team’s next match is against Australia on June 19 in Seattle.

In the previous World Cup, the U.S. managed only three goals across four matches. The current team’s performance under new coach Mauricio Pochettino reflects a transformation with his more creative approach and strong support from a passionate crowd of 70,492 spectators in Los Angeles.

Balogun’s World Cup debut marked the first multigoal performance by a U.S. player since 1930. Initially part of the English system, the New York-born Balogun opted to represent the U.S., bringing the level of striker talent the team has lacked.

Christian Pulisic, who assisted on the first goal, was substituted by Sebastian Berhalter at halftime. Although no injury was confirmed, Pulisic signaled reassurance to his family in the stands.

Pulisic was instrumental in setting up the opening goals, including a notable run in the 7th minute. His skillful move past two defenders led to Weston McKennie’s center pass, which was deflected in off Bobadilla.

As the match progressed, the U.S. focused their offensive plays around Pulisic. Balogun’s first attempt, initially called offside, was quickly followed by another opportunity facilitated by Pulisic’s pass, which Balogun successfully converted.

Before the halftime break, Malik Tillman provided a precise pass to Balogun, who utilized the space to deliver a goal into the far top corner. Despite Pulisic’s absence impacting the team’s coordination in the second half, Reyna added his first World Cup goal.

This successful match drew numerous American personalities, including Tom Cruise, George Lucas, Bill Gates, Halle Berry, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, highlighting the cultural significance of the event in proximity to Hollywood.
