Venus and Serena Williams made a much-anticipated return to the US Open on Friday night, marking the first time in four years that the legendary sisters played together on the court in Queens. After expecting to reunite earlier this summer at Wimbledon, Serena, who is 44 and making a comeback after years away from the sport, withdrew due to injury.
As they walked onto Arthur Ashe Stadium, the crowd greeted them with a massive ovation. Serena wore a jacket showcasing her US Open titles, including doubles victories with Venus in 1999 and 2009.
Facing Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Australian Maya Joint, aged 20, who was a toddler when the Williams sisters claimed the 2009 US Open title, the match began with a competitive first set. Chan and Joint took the lead, winning 6-3.
Venus and Serena rallied in the second set and pushed it to a seven-point tie-breaker. Despite several chances to seize the win, they managed to clinch the set, ensuring the match continued. The crowd predominantly supported the Williams sisters, celebrating every point.
Chan and Joint, participating in only their fourth event together, offered strong resistance, bringing the match to a thrilling final set tie-breaker. Although Venus and Serena led initially, winning five points consecutively, Joint and Chan fought back to claim victory after nearly three hours of play.
The match concluded with Chan and Joint achieving a memorable win, with scores 6–3, 6–7(6), 7–6(10), illustrating the continued prowess and compelling performance of the Williams sisters in tennis.
