In Lviv, a city marked by its resolve during Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, life presses on despite immense challenges. Military funerals, civilian weapons training, and beauty pageants reflect the city’s efforts to maintain a sense of normalcy four years into the war.
Diplomatic Efforts for Peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, urging a meeting to discuss ending the longstanding conflict between their nations. In his letter, Zelenskyy highlighted the United States’ current focus on Iran and called for direct engagement to stop the war.
“We see that the United States is fully focused on the issue of Iran, and it would be wrong to simply wait until the war in Europe returns to the center of its attention. Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct engagement between us — and you. I am proposing a meeting,” Zelenskyy stated.
He mentioned the possibility of hosting the meeting in countries like Switzerland, Türkiye, and others in the Arab world, emphasizing the importance of leadership in resolving conflicts.
Involving Global Powers
Zelenskyy argued that both Europe and the U.S. should play roles in the peace process, citing the need for security guarantees. He pointed out that since the conflict is taking place in Europe, these entities can positively influence the situation.
“We believe Europe should be part of this process — those who truly have the capacity to influence the situation. We also believe that the United States must be part of the process. This is what could help shape a new security architecture for our part of the world,” he explained.
Proposed Ceasefire and Prisoner Swap
The Ukrainian leader expressed a willingness to implement a ceasefire during negotiations and proposed a complete exchange of prisoners of war. This gesture, he noted, could pave the way toward resolving the conflict and facilitate the return of civilians and children taken during the war.
“We believe it would not simply be an attempt, but a real ceasefire — if that is what you want,” he conveyed.
A Call for Resolution
Zelenskyy firmly stated that Ukraine will resist for its survival. He warned Putin about the historical consequences for Russia if the war drags on, hinting at the potential for change driven by exhaustion within Russia itself.
“If you do not personally come to the conclusion that it is time to end this war, Ukraine will continue fighting for its existence. We will have those who support us. But you, too, will have to fight much harder for your own existence — not Russia’s, but your own,” he cautioned.
