Recent revelations of a suspected unauthorized biolab inside a Las Vegas residence have sparked significant concern among lawmakers, particularly about possible connections to the Chinese government. The discovery has prompted calls for stricter oversight of dangerous pathogens.
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri emphasized the need to uncover any potential ties between the homeowner, identified as Jia Bei Zhu, and the Chinese government. This is especially critical as Zhu was previously taken into federal custody after an unauthorized biolab was found in Reedley, California, in 2023.

The person managing the Las Vegas property, Israeli citizen Ori Solomon, was apprehended and is facing charges related to the improper disposal and discharge of hazardous waste, according to police reports.
“We’ve got to remember, Bret, that the Chinese government’s not our friend,” Hawley commented during an interview with Bret Baier on Fox News’ Special Report. He expressed concerns about a potential trend of Chinese government efforts to use Chinese nationals to access sensitive research in the United States, citing university campuses as one area of focus.
Hawley mentioned that these efforts have included placing nationals into strategic roles in research projects, universities, and laboratories.

According to Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, over 1,000 pieces of evidence with potential biological and hazardous materials were predominantly found in a locked garage at Zhu’s home. The discovery raises questions about how Zhu obtained these materials.
Suspected agents, including tuberculosis, dengue virus, HIV, and a highly lethal form of malaria, were identified at the site, echoing findings from Zhu’s 2023 arrest.
“It wouldn’t take much of these deadly pathogens to kill thousands of Americans,” noted Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas during an appearance on The Ingraham Angle. Cotton highlighted the lack of stringent controls over the distribution of these pathogens and has proposed legislation to impose stricter checks to ensure proper use.
Both Hawley and Cotton expressed urgency in determining whether additional unauthorized biolabs exist and the extent of CCP involvement.
“I think we better find out really quick,” Hawley urged.
