The Seattle Mariners announced a significant offseason move by hiring Jason Kanzler as their new manager. Kanzler, who previously served as the Chicago Cubs’ director of player development, is the 22nd manager in the history of the Mariners.
Kanzler, aged 36, expressed his enthusiasm in a statement, saying, “I am thrilled to join the Mariners organization, and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running. This team has an immense amount of talent in all facets of the game, and my coaching staff and I are excited to access and work towards the team’s full potential.”
Jason Kanzler, Mariners’ new manager, during his time with the Houston Astros.
Mariners president of baseball operations, Jerry Dipoto, commented on the new hire, highlighting Kanzler’s ability to promote a culture of improvement across the organization. “Jason has the mindset, expertise, communication skills, and intensity to help create a championship standard here in Seattle,” said Dipoto.
The Mariners, after reaching the ALCS in 2025, faced a challenging season last year with a record of 76-86. Kanzler aims to revive the team’s previous success.
Before his position with the Cubs in 2024, Kanzler gained experience with the Houston Astros between 2022 and 2023. His role evolved from a major league coach during their 2022 World Series-winning season to the assistant hitting coach in 2023.
Kanzler’s professional baseball journey began as an outfielder in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2013 to 2015. He played for Class A Cedar Rapids and High-A Fort Myers, maintaining a .249 batting average and a .720 OPS.
