Bill Gates appeared before a House Oversight Committee panel on Wednesday to address his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. This hearing is part of a broader investigation into Epstein’s relationships with powerful individuals. Gates spoke behind closed doors, with the release of transcripts anticipated later. Additional witnesses are expected to be called as the investigation progresses.
The Microsoft co-founder claims his appearance was voluntary, stating that his testimony aims to aid the effort to secure justice for Epstein’s victims. The committee is reviewing documents linking Gates to meetings and communications with Epstein.
Lawmakers present at the interview provided varying accounts. Rep. Tim Burchett described the questioning as “intense,” while Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi referred to Gates as “combative” and “not terribly forthcoming or candid.” Rep. Robert Garcia noted that Gates did push back on some inquiries but was “answering the questions.”
Background on Gates and Epstein’s Relationship
Gates’ past interactions with Epstein are under fresh scrutiny. Records from the Justice Department reveal Gates met with Epstein multiple times between 2011 and 2014. These meetings included calendar entries and emails about philanthropic projects and social events attended by both.
In February, Gates admitted at a town hall meeting to having affairs, which Epstein discovered. Records show no involvement with Epstein’s victims. Gates has repeatedly claimed these meetings were a mistake, emphasizing ignorance about Epstein’s criminal activities.
Melinda French Gates has expressed discomfort over her ex-husband’s meetings with Epstein. She stated these contributed to tensions in their marriage and emphasized the need for questions to be resolved by those involved, including Bill Gates himself.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury said Gates maintained contact with Epstein as a pathway to reach wealthy donors, viewing the relationship as narrowly acceptable.
Gates’ Statement to the Committee
“Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member, Members of the Committee—
Thank you for the opportunity to appear today. I am here to address my interactions with Jeffrey Epstein and assist in the Committee’s critical work. I support releasing all Epstein files and hope efforts will ensure justice for the survivors of Epstein’s crimes.”
Gates asserted he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal activity and did not witness any. He explained he was introduced to Epstein in 2011 through trusted sources in his professional and philanthropic circles.
He acknowledged oversight in his initial assessment of Epstein’s background but emphasized his focus on raising funds for global health, a significant part of his work for almost two decades. Gates explained that ongoing interactions with Epstein centered on philanthropic efforts, which eventually proved fruitless and led to the end of their communication in 2014.
Gates admitted to an indirect involvement when Epstein was consulted about an employee’s departure terms from Gates’ private office. He stressed that this was not at his request and highlighted Epstein’s attempts to exploit personal information.
Expressing regret for associating with Epstein, Gates affirmed that he had learned valuable lessons about reputation risks and cautious engagement moving forward. He reiterated his commitment to answering any questions the committee might have.
Details on Epstein’s Wealth and Death
Epstein acquired wealth primarily through managing funds for a select group of wealthy clients. His connections with influential figures across numerous sectors bolstered his status and financial dealings. Federal investigation documents reveal relationships across industries, fostering ongoing scrutiny into how he amassed his wealth.
Epstein passed away in August 2019 in a New York jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Authorities classified his death as a suicide. However, scrutiny around his network and financial dealings continues.
