Extradition Awaits Arizona Murder Suspect Arrested in Germany

Arizona murder suspect Varun Batchigari faces extradition from Germany after being arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Julissa Salazar. Former DOJ prosecutor Jim Trusty examines the challenges in bringing Batchigari back to the United States to face charges.

This happening to her feels so unfair in so many ways, said the mother of Julissa Julie Salazar.

Julissa Salazar, age 19, was discovered strangled in her apartment near the University of Arizona campus. Varun Batchigari, 20, from India, allegedly fled the U.S. and was captured in Berlin, Germany.

Batchigari entered the U.S. on an F-1 student visa in January, according to federal law enforcement sources. He is charged with first-degree murder for Salazar’s death. Reports suggest his motive related to a breakup with Salazar, who had ended the relationship before being killed.

Salazar had been studying psychology and was set to enter her third year at the University of Arizona. Her mother told Fox News Digital that she had already spoken with Batchigari about ending the relationship.

Before his arrest, Batchigari had been expelled from the University of Arizona following a reported fight in May. The university confirmed his expulsion on July 22.

The University of Arizona issued a statement offering condolences to Salazar’s family and stating their commitment to support those in need during this difficult time.

According to Pima County court records, Batchigari was charged with assault by the University of Arizona Police Department on May 26.

Julie Salazar was the eldest of three sisters. She was a first-generation college student and was accepted into the University of Arizona with a scholarship. Salazar aspired to be a child psychologist.

Her mother described her as a strong advocate for survivors, first-generation students, and mental health. She graduated high school in the top 5% of her class and had skipped a grade due to her intelligence.

Julissa Salazar’s family is now adjusting to life without her, and her mother remains hopeful for justice. Salazar is survived by her parents and two sisters.
