GLP-1 Drugs and the Potential for Life Span Extension

Recent research indicates that GLP-1 drugs, traditionally used for obesity and type 2 diabetes, may also extend life span. A study by the University of California, Berkeley, involving female mice, found that semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, can prolong life span by mitigating the negative effects of aging. Published in Nature on September 2, the study suggests GLP-1 medicines might help healthy individuals slow aging and live longer.

GLP-1 drugs, known as Ozempic and Wegovy, suppress constant eating thoughts and simulate a hormone that makes individuals feel full, slowing digestion. They balance blood sugar levels, reducing appetite, and are gaining popularity in treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. Data from Statista showed that one in eight Americans used them by March 2026. This trend aligns with dropping U.S. obesity rates, although experts recognize multiple contributing factors.

Study Findings

The study involved daily injections of semaglutide into 20-month-old female mice. Their life span increased from 742 days (the control group’s median) to 834 days. These mice experienced a 24% appetite reduction, decreased body weight, and improved tissue health. Study author Danica Chen highlighted enhanced physiological function, aging markers, and genetic aging regulators due to GLP-1 treatment.

Despite the promising results, some experts consider them expected. Richard DiMarchi, an Indiana University chemistry professor not involved in the study, stated that these results align with existing expectations. He noted that while peptide therapeutics interest is high, further validation and safety assessments are required, especially for longevity use in healthy individuals.

Similarly, Randy Seeley, a University of Michigan professor who has previously consulted for Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, mentioned existing trial data supports that these drugs reduce all-cause mortality, potentially extending life span.

Could GLP-1 Drugs Extend Life?

Chen suggested semaglutide might extend mice life span by reducing calorie intake. However, she acknowledged other factors might contribute, warranting further research.

Seeley noted that GLP-1 drugs could influence cardiovascular health positively. While initial concerns about heart rate increases existed, multiple GLP-1 agonists have shown reduced cardiovascular risk across different patient groups.

Additionally, potential anti-inflammatory effects of GLP-1s are under investigation. The exact mechanism of reducing inflammation remains unclear. Possible explanations include direct immune cell action, metabolic fuel shifting, or altering immune function regulation via brain activity. Researchers are exploring these possibilities.
