Parents Struggle With Loss of University of Idaho Student

Parents of University of Idaho student Kaylee Goncalves shared their ongoing struggles in dealing with the loss of their daughter. They revealed their daily emotional battles following her murder. This comes as Bryan Kohberger, convicted of her murder, attempts to revoke his guilty plea.

In a conversation on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast, Kristi and Steve Goncalves depicted their emotional turmoil. Kohberger, convicted of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, now seeks to withdraw his guilty plea.

“The first thing every single morning I often ask myself: Is this going to be forever? Will this eventually end?” Kristi shared with host Sean Hannity.

Kristi and Steve Goncalves have learned to adjust to a life colored by this tragedy. Kaylee was among those killed in November 2022. Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025, avoiding the death penalty under a deal. However, he now seeks to retract his plea.

Steve Goncalves spoke about how Kristi prays nightly for her daughter to visit her in dreams. She cherishes any opportunity to express her love and converse with Kaylee, even in dreams.

“Before she goes to bed, she’s praying that Kaylee comes and visits her,” Steve stated. “She wants to have a conversation. She wants to tell her she loves her.”

Trouble follows Kohberger as he attempts to withdraw the plea that avoided the death sentence for the murders of Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle. He received four consecutive life sentences plus ten years for burglary.

In challenging his conviction, Kohberger claims he was misled by his attorneys and believed the plea would secure better prison conditions. He asserts his innocence.

Kohberger’s new legal maneuvers have been hard on the Goncalves family after years of court battles. However, Kristi Goncalves sees a potential for prosecutors to aim for the death penalty again. She expressed hope that justice will be served correctly.
