Trump Promotes Energy and Semiconductor Investments Amid Economic Concerns

48 minutes ago 0

President Donald Trump announced significant investments in energy and semiconductor sectors as part of his economic agenda. These announcements come just before a midterm rally in Arizona, amidst voter dissatisfaction with the cost of living.

Trump highlighted a commitment from Taiwan to purchase $70 billion to $80 billion in liquefied natural gas from the proposed Alaska LNG project over the next 20 years. Taiwan may also invest up to $4.4 billion in the project’s development. Additionally, Trump announced a $21 billion investment by semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries to establish two new manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, with funding from Japan.

The president’s declarations on Truth Social coincide with voter discontent regarding economic conditions. A recent Associated Press-NORC poll revealed that only 17% of U.S. adults approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living. A Reuters/Ipsos survey indicated that about 78% of Americans attribute rising prices to Trump’s policies, such as tariffs and conflicts with Iran.

Further exacerbating voter frustration, the Labor Department reported that inflation increased in September. Consumer prices rose by 0.6% from August and 3.7% from the previous year. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, increased by 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually. Gasoline prices saw a significant jump of 9.1% in September, contributing to over half of the monthly inflation rise.

“Specific investment arrangements, equity stakes and related terms will be determined through subsequent negotiations and commercial contract procedures,” stated Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Despite the economic concerns, Trump presented these investment announcements as proof that his trade policies are generating major projects and jobs in the U.S. The Alaska LNG project represents approximately 30% of the project’s output for the next two decades, based on Taiwan’s commitment. Taiwan’s CPC Corp. plans to purchase 6 million metric tons of LNG annually and potentially invest up to $4.4 billion. However, details such as investment arrangements and contracts are still under negotiation.

Trump also mentioned South Korea’s potential $50 billion infrastructure investment, although Seoul has not finalized its participation in the Alaska project.

Regarding the GlobalFoundries investment, Trump claimed it would create 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs, as well as over 1,000 skilled manufacturing jobs in New York. These roles are tied to the new semiconductor manufacturing facilities planned in Malta.

Trump described the Alaska LNG development as “the GREATEST Project in Alaska History,” emphasizing that such initiatives only occur with his leadership. He also celebrated the New York investment as an “ALL-AROUND HUGE WIN FOR AMERICA,” portraying himself as a “great Businessman President” managing “the Greatest Economy in the World.”
