Trump and First Lady Attend Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in an honorary lap around the track before the IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C. on Sunday. They were in the presidential limousine, the Beast, as their motorcade made its way around the track before the start of the race. IndyCar fans warmly greeted the president’s motorcade with cheers during the lap. Trump was expected to initiate the race by waving the green flag.

The event was part of the larger celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix attracted attention as it was held in the nation’s capital, featuring a race course near significant landmarks like the U.S. Capitol and National Mall. The race included a 1.7-mile track covered in 147 laps.

Álex Palou secured the pole position for the race, leading the IndyCar series standings with six wins in the 2026 season. He held a 133-point lead over Kyle Kirkwood and a 137-point lead over David Malukas.

Trump and the First Lady interacted with drivers and team members, offering words of encouragement. Fox Sports reporter, Jamie Little, asked Trump about his interests at the event. He expressed his primary hopes, saying, “Just that everyone’s safe and they have a good time. I want everyone to be safe. I want everyone to have a good time.” He wished the drivers good luck and encouraged them to enjoy the event.

The weekend featured both IndyCar and International Race of Champions (IROC) series racing. Preparations for the event began days in advance, with final touches completed by August 20, 2026. The race was scheduled to officially commence at 1 p.m. ET.

IndyCar driver Álex Palou reflected on his visit to the White House earlier in the year. He described his experience attending the Oval Office, emphasizing the impact and significance of such a moment as a driver from a different country. Palou shared his appreciation for the U.S., highlighting the opportunities it presented him in his racing career. He also recounted a humorous moment where he was sprayed with the president’s cologne.

The establishment of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix was a part of Trump’s initiative to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary with meaningful events throughout the year. This inaugurated the race as a part of the celebrations.
