Trump Cancels Housing Act Signing, Urges Passage of SAVE Act

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump recently announced the sudden cancellation of the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. This decision came with an ultimatum for Congress to pass the SAVE Act. Through Truth Social, Trump communicated, “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The House had passed the Housing Act with a 358–32 vote, showing strong support for efforts to assist Americans facing housing affordability issues. The proposed legislation aims to increase the availability of homes and reduce costs. It also proposes to prohibit large institutional investors from acquiring single-family homes, thus giving individual buyers better opportunities.

In contrast, Trump criticized the Housing Act, labeling it as influenced by “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren” and downplaying its significance compared to interest rate reductions and the urgency of passing the SAVE AMERICA ACT.

Trump’s SAVE America Act

The SAVE America Act involves measures for voter ID and citizenship verification, critical as midterm elections approach. Despite Republican resistance, the act shows promise in the Senate. The act has been introduced in the House multiple times and includes requirements for citizenship proof to register to vote and photo ID verification at voting booths.

House Speaker Mike Johnson voiced agreement with Trump’s decision in a subsequent press conference. He expressed hope for advancing an election-integrity proposal through budget reconciliation, emphasizing, “We share that. We passed it three times in the House.” Johnson noted that basic voting requirements are supported by the majority of Americans, pointing out the need for enforcement in certain states.

Challenges and Opposition

The push for Trump’s SAVE America Act has encountered roadblocks. Trump urged action, stating on Truth Social, “Get the bad Republicans to approve it or, better yet, Terminate the Filibuster and approve it, AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPUBLICANS HAVE EVER DREAMED OF.” He emphasized urgency and criticized those delaying actions.

Negotiations on the housing legislation have included talks on restrictions for private equity investors and a temporary ban on central bank digital currencies. Home buyers face challenges, with median prices surpassing $400,000 according to Realtor.com. The bill aims to ease regulations on factory-built homes and environmental reviews, while encouraging updates in local zoning policies to boost construction and alleviate housing shortages.
