Trump Describes Improvements at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Amid Vandalism Claims

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump addressed the state of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool during the start of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington, D.C. He stated that the pool, previously subjected to vandalism, now appears “perfect.” Trump acknowledged previous vandalism by “thugs” and “bad people” targeting the historic landmark but assured attendees that restoration efforts are underway.

Trump remarked, “The Reflecting Pool that you’ve heard so much about, which is so incredible, it’s been gruesomely vandalized.” He emphasized that many vandals have been apprehended and are being prosecuted. “We can’t let that happen to our country,” he commented, expressing a determination to prevent future damage.

“In fact, I looked at it just a little while ago. It looks perfect already. But we’re fixing it,” Trump noted.

The president’s comments coincide with concerns over algae blooms at the Reflecting Pool, issues the administration attributes partly to vandalism. Trump alleged that chemicals were used, and a 350-foot gash was made in the pool’s lining.

Security measures around the Reflecting Pool have increased, with fencing installed to deter further vandalism ahead of Independence Day celebrations. The Interior Department mentioned this proactive step was taken in response to recent acts by “leftist activists.” Although vandalism claims are under scrutiny, the administration has not publicly shared evidence of these allegations.

Trump’s remarks highlighted efforts to maintain and enhance the nation’s capital’s aesthetics, aligning with the start of the 250th birthday celebrations for the United States.

Senator’s Concerns on Pool Restoration

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the Reflecting Pool repairs. He questioned the contractors involved, particularly those with alleged ties to Trump, about the project’s ongoing issues.

Blumenthal, representing Connecticut, expressed concerns over contracts awarded to firms like Greenwater and whether they were qualified. In a letter to key figures including John J. Cafaro and Greenwater’s CEO Al George, Blumenthal wrote, “The apparently flawed work undertaken by Greenwater has failed to prevent algae blooms from immediately recurring in the Reflecting Pool.” He questioned if taxpayer dollars were misused due to affiliations with Trump’s “unqualified friends,” leading to costly and inadequate landmark care.

This issue remains under investigation, with developments expected as more information becomes available.
