Trump’s Focus on Resolving Ukraine Conflict Post-Iran Agreement

1 week ago 0

President Donald Trump has shifted his attention to resolving the situation in Ukraine. After signing an agreement with Tehran, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Group of Seven summit in France. Trump expressed the desire to resolve Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine by stating that Iran would soon be “in the rearview mirror.” Doubts linger about the framework deal with Iran, but Trump remains optimistic.

During conversations with reporters, Trump declared his commitment to help Ukraine. He urged Russia to make a deal and planned another meeting with Zelenskyy. This realignment of focus follows a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which Trump reiterated his intention to prioritize the Ukrainian issue.

European leaders will welcome this development, having tried for months to keep Trump engaged in the ongoing war. The conflict, having persisted for over four years, saw Ukraine strike deeper into Russian territory with drones and missiles, shifting the narrative of the war. Despite Ukraine’s efforts to regain the initiative, there is still little indication of a battlefield or negotiation breakthrough.

Trump remains hopeful. He shared positive conversations with both Putin and Zelenskyy. Although there were no direct meetings with Zelenskyy scheduled at the summit, a U.S. official indicated that Trump, Macron, and Zelenskyy eventually met as a group. These discussions aimed to bolster Ukraine’s air defense and push for diplomacy to end the war.

Zelenskyy shared images of meetings with Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In previous diplomatic efforts, Trump pressured Ukraine to cede territory to meet Moscow’s demands. However, he appeared more flexible after his latest meeting with Zelenskyy.

European leaders were previously excluded from the negotiation process. This time, Zelenskyy is adamant that European allies should be involved. Despite opposition from Russia, Zelenskyy offered to meet Putin either at the G7 summit or in the U.S. The Kremlin dismissed the offer, and official communication between Moscow and Kyiv remains non-existent. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed no formal invitation for Putin to the summit but mentioned potential American negotiators visiting Russia soon.
