A 21-year-old University of Georgia student survived an eight-story fall from an apartment window. Kristin Sargent fell from an eighth-floor window at the Rambler Athens apartment complex in Athens, Georgia.

The fall occurred around 7:37 p.m. on a Saturday. According to a police report, she fell through a screen while dancing near an open window. She landed near a pool in a courtyard on the building’s second floor.

Police discovered evidence indicating that Sargent struck a metal bench during the fall. Blood was found on the bench’s cushion, and one of its armrests was broken.

Athens-Clarke County Police Department spokesperson Lt. Katie Jenkins mentioned that investigators believe the bench helped break her fall. The incident is not under criminal investigation. Sargent is reported to be alert and conscious.

Emergency 911 audio described the moments after Sargent fell. A friend called dispatchers, stating, “We’re on the eighth floor. My friend just fell out of the window.” The caller expressed uncertainty regarding Sargent’s condition.

“Is she moving? No, she’s not,” the caller responded to the dispatcher.

Emergency responders transported Sargent to a hospital. Police investigators interviewed her and witnesses while forensic personnel investigated the scene.

The Rambler Athens apartment complex is reviewing the incident. Police could not comment on the window or any existing safety measures in place.

A representative from the University of Georgia was not immediately available for further comment.
