The recent episode of The Ezra Klein Show dives into former President Trump’s strategies regarding the upcoming midterm elections. In this discussion, Ezra Klein converses with Republican strategist Liam Donovan about Trump’s apparent indifference to the potential loss of congressional control by his party.
Klein proposes a theory that Trump might not be focused on winning the midterms outright. The underlying idea is that Trump’s priority is maintaining control over the Republican Party. The party serves as his power base and provides protection, positioning him to exert influence beyond his presidency.
Trump’s unpopularity is marked compared to modern predecessors at this stage in his second term. The midterms are approaching in less than six months, with risks of losing the House and possibly the Senate. Klein suggests that if Trump were intent on winning, he would pivot towards centrism, tackling issues causing public discontent, and bolstering Republicans in key races. However, his actions indicate otherwise.
Trump’s recent moves include the announcement of a $1.8 billion fund that seems tailored for January 6 rioters. In Texas, he endorsed the controversial Ken Paxton over John Cornyn, thus potentially aiding Democrats in a Senate race that should be overwhelmingly safe for Republicans. He worked to primary Thomas Massie, who had released the Epstein files, and contributed to the defeat of Bill Cassidy, a senator who voted for his conviction. Moreover, he criticized Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from a district that supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
He likes voting against Trump. You know what happens with that. It doesn’t work out well.
Trump has also signaled potential escalation in the Iran conflict. When questioned about the financial hardships of Americans, his response was dismissive:
Reporter: Mr. President, to what extent are Americans’ financial situations motivating you to make a deal?
Trump: Not even a little bit. The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran is they can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.
Clips like these provide Democrats with valuable material for campaign ads. Trump seems more invested in consolidating his influence within the party. If he can manipulate elections to strengthen his hold, such as through redistricting, he will pursue that path. Otherwise, his focus lies elsewhere.
