Two days after Californians cast their primary election votes, the results of key races remain uncertain. Voters are waiting to see who will appear on the November ballot for governor of the nation’s most populous state and who will advance to challenge Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
In California’s primary system, regardless of party affiliation, the top two candidates proceed to the general election. As ballots continue to be counted, it’s unclear whether Democratic or Republican candidates will face off in the gubernatorial and mayoral races.
Governor’s Race
Currently, Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, leads the governor’s race with roughly 27% of counted votes. However, many ballots remain uncounted, leaving room for Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former Biden administration cabinet member, to possibly surpass Hilton. At present, Becerra trails closely with approximately 26% of counted votes. Additionally, Tom Steyer, a Democratic billionaire with progressive views, may catch up as more votes are tallied.
Mayoral Race
Meanwhile, Spencer Pratt, another Republican candidate, shows strong early results in the race to become Los Angeles mayor. His lead might diminish as additional ballots are processed. The competition in this race is particularly intense, as candidates aim to challenge incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.
With millions of Californian votes still uncounted, the final outcomes of both pivotal races remain pending. The state eagerly awaits further vote tallies to understand the potential political landscape for the November elections.
