3 weeks ago 0

On Friday, Graham Platner returned to the campaign trail in Bar Harbor, Maine, amid allegations from three women about his past behavior. Despite the scrutiny, hundreds of supporters stood by Platner, giving him several standing ovations and chanting his wife Amy Gertner’s name in support.

Platner referred to Maine as a state that has empowered him personally, stating, “Since the beginning, Maine, you had my back.” He mentioned past comments he made online during his journey through PTSD, recovery, and accountability, highlighting the support he received from Maine.

Platner responded to a New York Times article that outlined accusations from former girlfriends, asserting that as his past gets scrutinized and weaponized, the state stands by him. He denied politically motivated allegations as false, specifically addressing claims from Lyndsey Fifield about a physical altercation during their relationship.

Platner’s military service and struggle with PTSD were focal points in his speech. He emphasized Maine’s role in raising and saving him, reiterating his commitment to the state. He recognized his wife, Amy, amid supporters’ chants after controversy surrounding sexting allegations came to light.

Platner refrained from speaking to reporters post-event but conducted local interviews refuting claims of physical threats. In an interview, he questioned the motives behind certain allegations, labeling them politically driven.

Platner aimed to shift the focus of his campaign to his general election opponent, Republican Sen. Susan Collins, challenging her moderate image. He criticized her voting history, particularly regarding Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, accusing her of misleading voters.

Supporters at the event expressed unwavering support for Platner despite the allegations. Janice Low remarked on her strong intent to vote for Platner, highlighting her disapproval of President Trump’s actions in Iran and Collins’s voting record. Her husband, Galen Low, praised Platner’s ability to acknowledge past mistakes and move forward, emphasizing forgiveness and growth.

State Rep. Gary Friedmann complimented Platner’s speech, stating Mainers appreciate candidates who genuinely stand up for the people, unlike Collins, according to Friedmann.
